Rounding to the nearest 10 to estimate a sum
On our Saxon math practice, you have been seeing problems such as this one:
Circle the math problem that you would use to best estimate the sum of 24 and 77. The the options might say:
20+70= 90 30+70= 100
20+80= 100 30+ 80= 110
Some of the kiddos are simply just guessing and not really understanding the process of rounding the numbers to find a good estimated sum. We reviewed this in class again today. The link below will take you to a video where I model how to solve a problem like this one. If your student is struggling with this skill, it may help if you can reinforce the skill at home in the same way we do it at school.

The Life of My Cool Sneaker Shoe
If Kaitlyn's shoe could talk...
I'm cool and I'm fast. I have gray all around and a blue sneaker sign. I have blue and white on the bottom and pink laces with pink on the very bottom. My pink bottom makes me look tall. I love to go to school but my owner Kaitlyn doesn't I also like going on the treadmill. I don't like it when Kaitlyn throws me on the floor. I also don't like her stepping in dog droppings because it has to be on me! She always sticks her stinky sock in my mouth. Wait, wait, where am I going? Eww it smells like garbage.

Jolly Ranchers
Once upon a time there lived three Jolly Ranchers and there names were Blueberry, Raspberry, and Sour. They all lived together in a big blue bag but Sarah bought that bag. She took us and put us in the cart. She went to the check out line. Then, the check out lady put us in a white bag. Sarah put us in her car and drove off to her house. When she got home, her son Anthony grabbed the bag out of her hands. He opened the bag and said, "There are only three Jolly Ranchers in this bag. I don't care. I will eat them." and that is just what Anthony did.
